The ornate detailing around the watch face is all part of the art deco theme. Use of well placed lines to enhance form while adding visual strength to the watch. Large hex screws are used to enhance the powerful look, and hidden lugs move into a vertically lined rubber strap with a secure metal clasp. The face of the Below Zero Diver watch is very legible and I like the use of a "0" at the "12" position. It not only embellishes on the Below "Zero" them, but adds to the watches identity as a measuring instrument.

I would imagine that the typical watch consumer is intelligent. At least understanding words and meaning. What do you think of when you hear "extreme" or the even more extreme iteration of extreme, "xtreme?" Well I think about objects that takes a beating, and do so while functioning well. Not fancy gold watches with mechanical alarms. So while I really like the Vulcain Cricket Diver X-Treme (go ahead, picture extreme diving crickets, it is the logical thing to do), I think Vulcain's marketing team needs to hit the showers.

Another great ebay watch. Bape stands for "The Bathing Ape," and is a popular Japanese designer with a fanatically loyal following. They make what most would consider interesting and quirky fashion items from clothes, to shoes, and now watches. This watch is a Sinn EZM-1 diving watch done with a Bape design overhaul. The Sinn EZM-1 is a tremendously rugged and popular watch known for being able to resist extreme depths and other harsh conditions.
Sadly, this is the closest picture I could get of the gold Bvlgari watch that is worn in Tony Stark's garage/workshop. The movie watch shares the gold case and "Bvlgari Bvlgari" names on the bezel, though it has a new chronograph feature which utilizes two retrograde indicators on the each side of the face. Traditional Bvlgari chronograph watches features typical round subdials for the chronograph registers. Use of retrograde registers is a stylistic approach that offers a more unique sense of functionality. Assuming I find images of the exact watch, I will place them in this post. Any heads up would be appreciated.
It is this sub 00 watch segment which is mostly ignored. There are likely some reasons for this, but I think it is a negative omission that could easily be addressed. In the US, most watches sold, by far, are under 00. There is no good resource for information on what is out there, and new items from manufactures. Aside from online forums, such as the Poor Man's Watch Forum, there is little out there on the strongest segment of the US market. Hopefully this will change in time.

Inside the Temption Classic Formula Rally is a decorated Valjoux 7750 movement. The see-through case-back allows the owner to appreciate the complexity of the movement along with the coates de Geneve decoration on the movement and rotor. Most enthusiasts know how reliable Valjoux 7750 movements are. Used in watches ranging from 00 to well over ,000, the chronograph work-horse movement is of the most accurate ETA produces. On the bezel of the watch, Temption places a tachymeter scale used to measure speed. This is frequently used among racing enthusiasts in combination with track distance indicators. You begin the chronograph after passing one mile marker, and then stop the chronograph upon reaching the next mile marker; after you have traveled one mile. The seconds hand of the chronograph will point to the speed at which your vehicle was traveling as indicated on the bezel. A useful piece of functionality and always reminiscent of the racing spirit.
You have to love machines and gadgets to like watches. They are the original gadget. A tiny machine you wear on your wrist always moving, that you need to keep alive. Be it by winding, wearing, to keep a battery within. You can constantly view it working as it tells you the time. A watch with additional complications will tell you much more than the time, but even when a watch only tells the time, you can appreciate a watch so much more when it is accurate, and tells the time in a straight forward manner. This is about admiring perfection in engineering for a particular purpose.
Also of immense popularity among the Hollywood crowd are Panerai watches (mainly due to Sylvester Stallone), and IWC. Of course Omega and Rolex have their deeply ingrained popularity as well. But what I really like to see is when a star wears something totally out of the ordinary (I'm not talking about a Timex). I mean a nice and rare watch that signals the wearer put effort in to acquiring or learning about. Not merely something they walked into Westime (popular luxury watch store in Los Angeles) and picked out. Look out for more movie watch sightings.

The Azimuth Mech - 1 BMF instantly makes sense in terms of reading the time. I would never approve of any watch that made it too difficult to tell the time. The Azimuth Mecha - 1 BMF uses a modified ETA 2824-2 movement which has been modified. The modification process probably adds a couple of gears to move around the placement of the indicators. The result works well, and it is a benefit to the watch that it is powered by such a workhorse. The rest of the watch is top quality. The large case is 50mm high and 43 mm wide. This is big, but not gigantic by today's standards. Not the type of watch you have to worry about turning into a weight on your wrist. Instead this is a wonderful mechanical time telling instrument. As such, it is a perfect compliment to the detail orientated person who wants a precious tool on their wrist to compliment the other precision tools in their life.
These two watches together are being offered starting at over k. Which yes, Is a lot of money, but considering that is less than a quarter of what they would if purchased together from a retailer, it is a great deal. Coming together in a dual display box, you have watches that can be worn for any occasion. My personal preference would be to switch the bands, as I love the black on all gold look, and the brown alligator strap looks very nice complimented with the shimmering arctic blue.
Such may be the way that Patek Philippe and others might feel about the "new rich" of America who invest in status watches. However, there remains an inherent fallacy in this concept. Those in other parts of the world who purchase these watches for these prices are wealthy too, but perhaps have a more cultural tie to watches, or have "old" money. The message here to Americans who want "nice" watches is, "go learn to appreciate watches on your own, then come to us when you can afford them." Patek should instead educate and display their watches in a dignified yet humble manner. So that upon the ability to purchase such a watch, one will do it based on appreciation, not merely price.

Overall, I enjoyed what I saw in terms of watches, but really have to evaluate the participants in this hobby. These people were into expensive collectibles, not watches. They didn't really care about value, and the only people I had a decent conversation with were the people selling, not buying the watches. Still, I have to remember that this show was for lovers of the most exclusive and expensive manufactures, not most of the watches we wear.
Like the Gran Prix de Monaco Historique, the Speed Black Chronograph embodies a Valjoux 7750 movement and is a certified Chronometer. Right now, the Speed Black Chronograph is part of a 1000 piece limited edition, and I imagine they will go fact. The watch also has my favorite feature of any Mille Miglia watch, that being the tire tread strap. Chopard still does this the best, using a pattern taken from 1960's Dunlop racing tires (obviously not ultra-slicks). Such straps just look superbly cool sitting on your wrist. Always a good idea. Figure prices to be a bit higher, perhaps in the 00 - 00 range.
Have no doubt that this is a large watch. The case without crown is 45mm. I personally love this size, but many are confused about the trend of large watches. Hear me this, the Citizen Campanola series of watches are meant to be shown and appreciated. Each detail is meticulously applied. The face of the watch employs a three-dimensional look with a raised minute counter and its many hands. The outer portion of the face with the numerals is also raised up from the middle of the face. You look into this watch, not at this watch.
